Nearly half a century since its founding, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), a prominent force in Ethiopian politics, finds itself at a crossroads. Born in the midst of the Ethiopian Revolution in 1975, the TPLF emerged victorious against the military Derg in 1991 and dominated the country's political scene for nearly three decades as part of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (#EPRDF) until its influence declined after 2018.

The cancellation of its registration as a political party in January 2021 and subsequent designation as a terrorist organization by the federal parliament in May 2021 marked a dramatic shift in the party's recent history. Though the November 2022 Pretoria peace deal ended the two years war in  #Tigray and led to its removal from the terror list in March 2023, the party now grapples with new internal and external challenges.

According to Meuz Gidey of the Tigray Research Center, "The TPLF lost its commitment, sincerity and ability to adapt after Meles Zenawi's death, eroding public trust." Tensions also arose between TPLF leaders Debretsion Gebremichael and Getachew Reda following the formation of the Tigray Interim Administration after the peace deal.

While Dejen Mezgebe of the Tigray Independence Party stated "The hope for revival within the TPLF is bleak" due to declining popularity, the TPLF's Hadush Kahsu expressed confidence in overcoming obstacles. As the TPLF prepares for regional elections, its ability to unite its ranks, provide a clear vision for addressing Tigray's challenges, and rebuild trust among the local population will be crucial for determining its future relevance.
